”The Rising Sun” is an attractive old pub on Carter Street (EC1 postcode district) in London, rather hidden away in a Dickensian alley next door to the historic Priory Church of Saint Bartholomew the Great. Reviewers describe it as a comfortable place with darts and fruit machines, cheap grub, and a Tuesday quiz night. Who could resist that? And someone please tell me what a fruit machine is. Does it actually dispense an apple or plum when you insert a pound coin? (Dimmilan flickr)
St. Mary Woolnoth, located on the corner of Lombard Street and King William Street in London, is an ancient site which has been utilised for worship for at least 2,000 years; remnants of Roman and pagan religious buildings were unearthed beneath its very foundations.
It is also a very cute little church, with the bicycles and clock and iconic Underground sign all adding to that inexpressible London ambiance. I expect to see Boris whizzing down the lane on his shiny blue Barclay bike, yellow hair blowing wildly above his head, whilst renegade chavs pelt him with rotten fruit and yell, ‘Tory tosser!’ Boris and I have become pals after I posted this and he forgave me for that. We text each other, though; since I never know what his Twitter account might be. (Simon_k on flickr)

Regent Street, London is one of the West End’s major shopping streets; named after the Prince Regent (later George IV) and commonly associated with architect John Nash, whose street layout from 1825 survives today. Regent Street runs from the Regent’s residence at Calton House in St. James’s, through Piccadilly Circus, crosses Oxford Street at the busy Oxford Circus, and terminates at All Souls Church.
